We’ve all safely distanced ourselves from the novelty Xmas dressing up outfits by now, boxed away those reindeer fascinators and fur-lined santa-esque undies – but don’t lose that imaginative dressing up streak just yet…Among many trends we are hearing whisperings of for 2010 is that of the fairytale kind. Yes the worlds of fashion and entertainment will come together this Spring to break new ground with collaberations of an escapist theme.
The first we are due to see is Tim Burton’s live-action “Alice in Wonderland” remake, due to open March 5th. Designers including Stella McCartney are set to roll out Alice-inspired pieces in time for the film’s release. So what will we see? hallucinogenic mushroom –style dresses and eye-popping plaids? Clubs and spades embellishments? And some mad-hatters no doubt….Even the Crimbo window displays at Bergdorf Goodman in New York bore an “Alice in Wonderland” theme, and in March Parisian department store Printemps reportedly plans to unveil window displays of custom “Alice” dresses by the likes of Alexander McQueen and Christopher Kane.
Designers recently name-checking Lewis Carroll and his creations include Donatella Versace, Jason Wu, Kenzo’s Antonio Marras, and Zac Posen. A self-professed lifelong fan of all things Alice, Posen has collaborated on a collection of Wonderland-themed jewelry and recently unveiled a pre-fall 2010 collection that he describes as “Lewis Carroll meets Paloma Picasso,” which includes thigh-length, Alice- dresses in mad plaids. He says:
“First, there’s a real sense of escapism and imagination to it that I think is important in popular culture right now,” he said. “And Alice and ‘Through the Looking Glass’ have really become a part of the fashion vernacular.”
