The art of burlesque is an area we are becoming more and more familiar with these days, I mean who doesn’t know of the sassy Dita von Teese and her writhing antics in a big champers glass?
For those unsure of what this latest phenomenon is exactly - burlesque is a form of dance which was hugely popular in the glamorous theatre and music halls of the 19th century and has made a massive comeback in the entertainment world. It involves sexy and cheeky striptease routines and is backed by old style jazz music, and it must be said accompanied by some amazing vintage inspired outfits!
We are seeing burlesque themed nights, clubs, fashion shows and even classes and workshops for those who want to start up their very own troope!
I can see this burlesque-ercise knocking the pole dancing classes off the top fitness spot – and many happy boyfriends and hubbies willing to act as the guinea pig audience. A playful and sensual attitude are musts for budding wannabes – for the girls that is!
The cabaret nights are great fun and the perfect occasion for dressing up in your most fabulous vintage frocks. The next big burlesque event in Dublin is this Thursday, check out the details:
‘The Burlesque and Cabaret Social club’
Thursday 2nd July from 9pm till late
Venue: The Sycamore Club (above Purty Kitchen)
Sycamore Street, Templebar, D2

Vintage clothes for Vintage dogs, what a fabulous concept! If dogs are a guys best friend (and more recently a blonde celebs best accessory) then surely they deserve the coolest threads! Check out this amazing new company ‘Scutte’ (pronounced “scoot”) a San Francisco based pet apparel company - hip, stylish, ethical and eco-friendly! The brains behind the canine clothing company Kira Stackhouse says:
“Scutte was created to fill a void in the pet apparel market for sustainable, classic pet clothing that also reflects urban sensibility and style. We want to bring out the “cool” in your canine!
Let’s face it – small dogs get cold, and if you live in a city where it gets chilly, you’re probably throwing a top or jacket on your pup. In a world where pet fashion is a growing rage, it’s hard to find some everyday simple clothes for your pup. Who wants to dress up everyday? …Certainly not me, and I’m sure your dog doesn’t want to either. “
After adopting her own pooch and realizing the gap in the market, Kira began to scour second hand stores for vintage pieces to reconstruct for her new best friend- a dream was soon born and realized!
We particularly love their rocker tees, the perfect addition to that studded collar and chain look all the pooches go in for! Check out the goods : http://www.scutte.com/

If you havn’t heard of the gorgeous super talented Dub Imelda May – well hold onto your hats people. This girl has a voice and a look to shake all those wannabe pop princesses off the radar! In 2008 she was awarded the Best Female Newcomer of the Year at the Irish World Newspaper awards – and deservedly so, what a breath of fresh air she is.
Unique, sassy, with a healthy hint of burlesque – we reckon Imelda is one rockin chick we’ll be seeing for a long time. Recently signed by Universal Music and taking the London music scene by storm AND described as the Irish Amy Winehouse – not bad for the Dublin-born Liberties lass eh. She got her first big break with the renowned jazz n’ blues maestro Jools Holland who hasn’t stopped raving about our Imelda since.
Imelda has not only joined Jools on stage but has also sang with some top talent like the late Kirsty MacColl, Alison Moyet, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross and Van the man Morrison. Her retro look and musical influences are very 1950s, inspired by the likes of Billy Holiday, Dinah Washington and queen of rockabilly, Wanda Jackson. The songstress is even branching out into film, with her debut singing on ‘Dark Streets’ a forthcoming American gangster movie. Go girl…
Have a little taster on this youtube clip and for all fellow-fest-goers out there, remember Imelda will be doin her thang at Electric Picnic this year, bring on the boom boom…

‘Public Enemies coming soon!’ You’d be forgiven for thinking those hardgroovin’ rappers were coming to town on hearing this, but no… this is the next big droolfest for da ladies – hunks in herringbone tweed and some amazing vintage gladrags will be gracing the silver screen real soon!
The latest of Michael Mann’s movies is based on the true story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger and gang and the FBI agent on his trail Melvin Purvis (yep you couldn’t make that name up). Now I don’t know about you gals but the idea of Christian Bale chasin Johnny Depp around the screen for a couple of hours is enough to get us in a movie kinda mood– the fab clothes on Marion Cotillard will be a mere frosting on this little treat!

This movie is already said to be the buzz of LaLa land, what with the costumes, hairstyles, cars and sets – they just don’t make gangsta’s like they used to (hear that Public Enemy) During the real-life chase, J. Edgar Hoover announced that John Dillinger was America’s first Public Enemy Number, hence the name of the movie.
And get this…the producers even hired a vintage clothing consultant, Ardis Taylor, who helped Hollywood costume designer Colleen Atwood to find clothing for the oh so hot cast, most of which they picked up in a Michigan vintage store. The studio bought some 400 items of 1930s clothes and accessories from ‘Apparel From the Past’ – “Among the items were a lot of shoes, gloves, dresses, hats, earrings and jewelry”, said the owner Marsha Ruby – and plenty of pin-striped 3-pieces I’m sure…
Public Enemies comes out on July 1st, bibs at the ready now!
