Anyone remember that brown and cream polkadot dress on Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman? You know – when she did a turn as the classy lady? Cast your mind back or pop out the dvd – we loved it then (the dress that is) and are still excited to come across the trend all these years later.

Why oh why are we going dotty over polka you ask – well the style is great fun, retro, funky and feminine all at the same time and anyone can get away with wearing them, from the little girls to the grans. Just who is Summer Phoenix? This could easily be the title to one of our frocks but no…this is the youngest of the famous Phoenix clan, sis of Joaquin and the late River. Actress, model, former band member and now vintage dealer – a girl after our own hearts!

In 2003 Summer, who is also married to Casey Affleck btw, Odessa Whitmore (Matt Damons ex) and Summers best pal Ruby Canner set up a recycled vintage boutique in New York. They describe their wares as ‘repurposed vintage’ clothing and called the store ‘Some Odd Rubies’. See how each word has the same first initial as each gals name? Ah yeah there it is.

With the success of their apparel in the big apple, this talented trio recently opened a second branch in sunny LA! Handier for all those Hollywood relatives and pals we reckon. In an interview Phoenix told Fashion Week Daily that she and her galpals “always went hunting in thrift stores, pinning and cutting our finds, and we always said we’d do a line of clothing.” And that’s exactly what they did.

Just like Perk Up’s revamped range the girls takes vintage pieces, which they deconstruct and rework to fit in with current styles and body types. “Every piece is one of a kind, so you won’t see anybody else in your dress,” adds Odessa. That’s what we keep telling people Odessa! So nice to see these gorgeous celebs not following high end designs and celebrating recycling and all that is vintage, we salute you!

The stores launch party had A-listers in abundance –all sniffin out those vintage bargains I’m sure -with Summer’s in-laws Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner– other guests on the night were Liv Tyler, Eva Mendes and Patricia Arquette to name a few. And although poor oul Ben doesn’t get out much lately –what with being knee-high in nappies, he rocked up to support his sister-in-law’s venture. “What these girls do is really recycling, and we should all support that,” said the actor. Ah to have a friend like Ben…

Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood – rock ‘n’ roller, writer, artist,  resident of Co.Kildare and most recently known for dating model Ekaterina Ivanova who at 19  is about one-third of his age (he’s  a sprightly 63 btw)  and for falling off , then getting back on the wagon – yes he’ll take his White Russians any way he can get them…

As if his professional cv didn’t impress as it stands, dirty old Ron is launching a line of accessories, T-shirts and dresses with Liberty of London, due to hit the shops for Autumn/Winter. I suppose it shouldn’t come as a big surprise that Ronnie gets into the clothing game- what with his gal-pal and daughter both taking to the runways and his wife taking to the cleaners – inevitable eh?

We wonder what the inspiration behind the rockers label will be – grungey rock chick? gold-digga glam??  And will they be as collectible as the artist’s famous caricatures, hmmm… we’ll just have to wait and see.  Personally I think he should dig up all those skinny tees and denims he paraded around in during his 70s and 80s tours – talk about the tale of the travelling pants! Those threads could host their own chat show. A label like ‘Retro Ron’ springs to mind or maybe ‘Vintage Wood’ – well if it’s good enough for Ekaterina…

Thandi Newton is one of our very favourite breed of stars – this girl is a green celeb – the coolest kind don’tcha think? Yes she shops secondhand, yes she adores vintage, but it doesn’t end there.

Not only is she stunning, talented and down to earth with it, but she is constantly supporting environmental causes, donating to recycling programs and even writes letters to her fellow celebrities encouraging them to do likewise and buy with a conscience. And this green-gal isn’t too bothered about replies either, she just wants them to pay attention, hear hear!
